Artist's Statement
I think of my art as "serious fun".
I attempt to convey simple feelings and moods using simple or artificially limited means, while also developing a distinctive personal aesthetics. Hopefully the resulting work can generate interest.
For the cut-outs series, it's obvious that I'm inspired by Matisse. However I don't use paper but canvas on canvas glued on board. It's more durable. Sometimes I try to induce an ambiguous little narrative to the experience by including a human-like figure (or many).
For the hard-edge ink paintings, I use watercolor paper (thick, very absorbent) on which I set rectangular or triangular shapes using masking tape, and in which I "paint" wet-on-wet with acrylic ink. The result is rectilinear forms with cloudy content. I add black dots where I think they will strengthen the composition.
I also have produced a lot of work in hot glass in the past (i.e. glassblowing and sculpture). I will re-boot my "flames" series. Stay tuned.
Mini-Bio
Born and raised in Montreal
Moved to the Boston area when I was 25, where I have lived since, minus a hiatus in Calgary and the U.K.
Discovered glass art and 2-D art at about the same time in my late twenties. I have never lost the appetite for either pursuit.
